UPG high school math/science program funded

Pitt-Greensburg has received a $10,000 grant from the McFeely-Rogers Foundation for a week-long summer science and math program for rising sophomores in the Greater Latrobe School District.

The program will be offered this summer to 15 students who will be selected by their science and math teachers. Possible focuses include biology, physical science, chemistry, mathematics and archaeology. Specific topics will be selected by Thad Zaleskiewicz, the project coordinator and a retired Pitt-Greensburg physics professor, other Pitt-Greensburg faculty in these subject areas and the ninth-grade science and math teachers at Greater Latrobe.

The summer program will be an inquiry-based, hands-on, experiential learning program where students will have the opportunity to live on campus, engage in workshops and research activities and be mentored by Pitt-Greensburg senior faculty members.

The goal is to stimulate interest about the ways in which biology, physical science, archaeology and mathematics are applied in real-life scenarios.
