Pitt employees by the numbers

Pitt employees numbered 405 fewer in fall 2012, down 3 percent from the prior fall, the most recent University figures available. The number of employees fell from 13,777 to 13,372, with a reduction of 345 full-time and 60 part-time employees.

Staff numbers down

The biggest reduction was in University staff, which fell more than 5 percent. Staff numbered 7,446 in fall 2011, but fell to 7,052 in fall 2012, a reduction of 394 (339 full-time and 55 part-time). Most of that change was a result of the voluntary early retirement program through which 352 staff left the University in June 2012.

The number of research associates and post-docs fell 4 percent to 951 in fall 2012. With 45 fewer full-time and two additional part-timers in the classification, the net loss was 43.

Faculty numbers up

At the same time, faculty numbers were up slightly, rising to 5,369 in fall 2012. The addition of 39 full-time and reduction of seven part-time faculty resulted in a net gain of 32.
