Obituary: Kevin Hyunkyung Kim
Kevin Hyunkyung Kim, a School of Education faculty member, died July 18, 2014, at his home in Sewickley. He was 45.
Kim joined the school in 2003 as an assistant professor, and became an associate professor of research methodology in the Department of Psychology in Education in 2009.
He had a secondary appointment as an associate professor of business administration in the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business. He also was an affiliated faculty member in the Department of Medicine.
“Kevin was extremely generous with both his time and his expertise,” said his department chair, Suzanne Lane.
“He spent many hours with both students and faculty sharing his deep knowledge of quantitative methodology. His intellect, wit and humor will be remembered by all.”
Kim’s scholarship was in statistical methods as well as in the behavioral and social sciences. His work focused on structural equation modeling, multivariate statistics, multilevel modeling and Asian-American mental health.
He published in methodological journals and journals in many other academic disciplines, and worked as a co-investigator on federally funded grants with faculty throughout Pitt and other universities.
In 2007, he co-wrote the book “Univariate and Multivariate General Linear Models: Theory and Applications” with colleague Neil Timm.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from California State University in 1996, then his master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology from UCLA with a concentration in quantitative methodology. He earned his graduate degrees in 1999 and 2003, respectively.
Kim was born in South Korea and moved to Los Angeles when he was in elementary school.
Surviving are his mother and two brothers.
The School of Education is planning a memorial service in September.
