CRC wants publicity about Pitt, community activities

The University Senate community relations committee (CRC) is seeking ways to spread the word on campus about community and University partners’ activities and projects. CRC’s monthly meetings regularly include updates from community partners as well as from the Office of Community and Governmental Relations, the PittServes Office and other University representatives.

“We all get really great information sitting here, but I feel it sometimes just dies when we walk out the door,” said CRC co-chair Linda Hartman, in making better dissemination of information a committee goal for the year.

Hartman agreed to look into the possibility of using social media on the recommendation of Kannu Sahni, director of community relations, who said his office has found it effective.

CRC members also discussed programming for the year at the committee’s Sept. 15 meeting. Hartman said she and fellow co-chair Pamela Totl hope to introduce a new format for this year’s CRC meetings. The plan includes receiving updates from partners during the first half-hour, followed by a speaker and discussion.

Suggestions for speakers included inviting Rebecca Bagley, vice chancellor for economic partnerships, to discuss community engagement in the University’s strategic plan; inviting speakers from area bicycling advocacy groups and from disability advocacy organizations. In addition, CRC plans to engage in a service project in lieu of its December meeting, and choose a venue for its traditional annual spring “field trip” to a nearby community organization.

A plan to re-examine CRC’s mission statement, last reviewed in 2011, was postponed to a future meeting.

CRC’s next meeting is set for noon Oct. 20 in 272 Hillman Library.
