2 emeritus trustees to be nominated

Catherine D. DeAngelis and John A. Swanson were recommended as emeritus trustees at an Oct. 5 meeting of the Board of Trustees nominating committee. The nominations will be considered by the full board Oct. 23.

DeAngelis served on the board 2002-15. She was a member of the risk and compliance committee and the health sciences committee, which she served as vice chair for 13 years.

In 2000, she was named a Legacy Laureate, one of the highest Pitt alumni honors. In 2003 she received the Distinguished Fellows Alumni Award.

DeAngelis received her medical degree from Pitt, her master’s from Harvard’s Graduate School of Public Health (health services administration) and completed her pediatric specialty training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

She is university distinguished service professor emerita and professor of pediatrics emerita at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; professor of health policy and management at The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and editor in chief emerita of JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Swanson served on the board 2006-15. He was a member of the institutional advancement, property and facilities and student affairs committees.

He earned his PhD in applied mechanics from Pitt and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Cornell.

Swanson is a recipient of the Chancellor’s Medal and the School of Engineering Distinguished Alumnus Award. In 2007, in recognition of more than $42 million in giving, the engineering school was named the John A. Swanson School of Engineering. Swanson has been a member of the school’s Board of Visitors since 2013.

He founded ANSYS and served as its president for more than 20 years. He now is president of Swanson Analysis Services, a finite-element and solar-power consulting firm.
