October–Breast Cancer Awareness Month

mammogram

The average size of a breast lump found during a self-exam is about the size of a quarter. The average size found during a first mammogram is about the size of a dime.

Mammograms can find some breast cancers that are even smaller than that.  Finding breast cancer when it is small can give women a big advantage,         because cancer that is found early may be easier to treat.

An annual mammogram is recommended for most women ages 40 and over.

Don’t short-change yourself. Its worth making time for your mammogram.

Effective for October 1, 2015,  UPMC Health Plan will begin covering Digital Breast Tomosynthesis, also known as 3D Mammography.

Previously, this service was excluded from coverage as an experimental and investigational service. 3D Screening Mammograms, obtained from a participating provider, on or after October 1, 2015, could be covered at no cost to the member as a preventive service.
