New dog on duty

Officer-SamOfficer Sam, the Pitt police’s new explosives detection dog, receives a warm welcome from staff in the Office of the Secretary on his first day on the job.

Sam arrived on campus Feb. 8 after completing training with handler Sgt. David Nanz.

Greeting Sam are Amy Service, associate secretary of the Board of Trustees; Kim Honath, executive secretary of the Board of Trustees; and Linda SantaCasa, administrative assistant.

Sam, a 19-month-old German shorthaired pointer, succeeds Officer Riggs, who joined the Pitt Police in 2006 as the University’s first K-9 officer.

Signs of arthritis forced Riggs, a 10-year-old Labrador retriever, into retirement last month.
