Manners faculty development grants available

The University Center for Social and Urban Research (UCSUR) is seeking applicants for the fourth annual Steven D. Manners Faculty Development Awards. Two awards of up to $10,000 each relating to work in the social, behavioral and policy sciences will be given in honor of Manners, who worked at UCSUR for 26 years and was assistant director at the time of his death in September 2000.

Full-time faculty from all Pitt campuses are eligible. Preference will be given to junior faculty, faculty in the Arts and Sciences or provost-area professional schools, and faculty at the regional campuses.

One award is a research development grant to support pilot research; the other is an infrastructure development award aimed at enhancing faculty capabilities to conduct interdisciplinary research.

Research development grants are intended to have the potential of leading to larger, externally funded projects. Infrastructure development awards enable faculty to develop, acquire and disseminate new research skills that enhance faculty capabilities in the social, behavioral and policy sciences.

The following criteria will be used in evaluating proposals: significance of area addressed to the University community; the innovativeness of the approach taken; the likelihood of enhancing the research capabilities of University faculty, and the likelihood that the project will lead to subsequent interdisciplinary research efforts.

Applications are due April 16; awards will be made by June 18. For application instructions orfor more information, contact James Clossin at 4-5522 or jcl100@pitt.edu.
