New Employees’ FAQs Answered

Curious if you’re on track for a comfortable retirement? Uncertain about how to advance your professional development? Wondering if there is a Pitt discount available for a large purchase you’re considering? Staff Matters columns aim to answer your Pitt Human Resources questions.

In this column, the Office of Human Resources addresses questions most-frequently asked by new Pitt employees.

How can I set up a one-on-one session with a retirement savings representative?

One-on-one sessions with a representative from TIAA are available for free to faculty and staff of the University, with five offices located right on campus. TIAA is also available for one-on-one sessions at their Bakery Square location. Visit the Retirement Savings Plan page for more information or sign up for a one-on-one session on TIAA’s website. How can I get the most out of the PittPerks program?

The PittPerks program offers a range of discounts for faculty and staff to use, including reduced rates on PITT ARTS and athletics events and discounts at the University bookstore, as well as many places around Pittsburgh. You can also use your employee ID for things like reduced fare and free transit rides, or you can load it up with money to use at restaurants in the Oakland area. What does the health and wellness center offer to employees?

Pitt’s MyHealth@Work Health and Wellness Center offers many no-cost services to University employees. These services include one-on-one health coaching for weight loss and lifestyle changes, smoking cessation and stress management, as well as diagnoses for acute conditions. Services are available in person at the on-campus health and wellness center, online and over the phone. Learn more about the center by visiting its webpage online.

How can I get involved in volunteering at the University as an employee?

Pitt offers many volunteering opportunities throughout the year by partnering with organizations around Oakland such as the Pittsburgh Food Bank, Central Blood Bank, United Way and more. If you are interested in serving the community, visit the HR website as well as the Community & Government Relations website for more details on available service opportunities.

What are the requirements to finish clearances and training for new employees?

As a new employee, you must complete and present the following child protection clearances to the Office of Human Resources:

  • Child Abuse History Clearance
  • Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check
  • FBI Criminal Record Check

These clearances must at least be completed and pending receipt up to a 90-day provisional period. Contact HR for any questions you may have regarding your own provisional period.
