Road construction hotline set up

A hotline has been created for motorists seeking information on key road projects in the Pittsburgh area. The Boulevard of the Allies bridge replacement project is among several large projects featured in the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation construction hotline.

The number, 412/429-6035, also includes recorded information on the Parkway East reconstruction, Route 28 reconstruction and widening, I-79 Neville Island to I-279 reconstruction and I-279 McKnight Road improvements.

Callers will be prompted through an automated system to select the project they wish to learn more about.

Work on the bridge replacement project has begun. Lane closures on Fifth Avenue between Craft Avenue and the Birmingham Bridge were delayed for two weeks by inclement weather.

Fifth Avenue traffic headed toward Downtown is expected to be reduced to a single lane through October.

According to PennDOT, the lane closure is necessary as contractors shift the existing bus lane into the center lane of Fifth Avenue to accommodate drainage work, sidewalk construction and the building of a new ramp that will connect Fifth Avenue directly to the Boulevard of the Allies.

The work is part of the two-year $29 million project to replace the Boulevard of the Allies Bridge. The bridge is set to close in 2008.

A single left lane closure on Forbes Avenue from Moultrie Street to the Parkway East off-ramp and a northbound lane closure on Route 885 in the area of the existing Boulevard of the Allies Bridge that started April 2 will continue as well, PennDOT officials said.

Information and project updates also are available online at www.otma-pgh.org/project_sr885/default.aspx.
