New sports complex named for Petersens

Pitt will name its new Olympic sports complex after an alumnus and his wife, in recognition of their financial support toward the complex’s construction.

The Petersen Sports Complex, named for John M. and Gertrude E. Petersen, who also are namesakes of the Petersen Events Center, will provide state-of-the-art homes for the Panthers baseball, softball and men’s and women’s soccer teams.

Separate baseball, softball and soccer stadiums are being constructed, all of which will include practice areas, team dugouts and press boxes, in addition to regulation-sized playing fields.

Completion of the complex on the upper campus is expected by spring 2011.
