Dec. 18 is deadline for staff award nominations

Members of the University community are invited to nominate outstanding Pitt staff members for the annual Chancellor's Distinguished Service Award for Staff.

The service award, the highest award that Pitt grants to staff members, honors staff who demonstrate dedication to their units and community service beyond their job responsibilities.

All classified full- and part-time staff who have been employed at the University for at least three years are eligible.

There are two main criteria for the award, according to guidelines issued by the chancellor's office. First, the candidate must demonstrate voluntary service activity at the University, in the local community or with professional organizations. Second, candidates must demonstrate "a consistent pattern of extraordinary dedication to the University above and beyond the candidate's job responsibilities."

The award carries a $2,500 cash prize. Winners' names will be inscribed on a plaque in the William Pitt Union. Winners also are acknowledged at the annual honors convocation.

Nomination forms are available at 130 William Pitt Union.

The nomination form and supporting materials should be sent to: Robert G. Houston, awards committee chairperson, 130 William Pitt Union. Questions should be directed to Houston at 412/648-1006.

The deadline for submitting nominations is Dec. 18. Award recipients are expected to be announced in early 2003. Up to five awards are granted annually.

The staff awards committee is appointed by the chancellor and includes the president of the Staff Association Council and the associate vice chancellor for Human Resources as non-voting members. The committee consists of a member from the prior year's committee, a prior year's award recipient, a regional campus representative, an Office of Human Resources representative and the chairperson.
