SAC book award winners announced

The inaugural winners of the Staff Association Council's (SAC) Book Fund for Children of Staff were announced yesterday at the long-term staff annual reception.

The annual book fund provides financial assistance toward the purchase of books for selected undergraduates attending any of the five Pitt campuses whose parent or legal guardian is a Pitt staff member. Funds were provided by donations from Pitt staff and from proceeds of SAC fund-raisers, according to Barbara Mowery, president of SAC.

"We really have to keep holding fund-raisers and asking for donations if we want to keep this going," Mowery said. She added that SAC's goal was to raise enough money to create a book fund endowment.

To be eligible, a student must be enrolled currently, have at least a 2.0 average, and provide a statement of post-graduation plans and goals, along with a copy of the current academic record from the registrar.

A committee of three SAC members, a Human Resources representative and an academic representative determined the winners, Mowery said.

Each winner received $200 to use at a Pitt bookstore on the student's campus.

Winning students and their staff member parents are: Megan R. Barkell, daughter of Patricia L. Barkell, Admissions and Financial Aid, Greensburg campus; Jennifer Booth, daughter of Rosemary Booth, Department of Music; Justin Kerr, son of Mary Stewart, School of Information Sciences; Lawrence E. Martin, son of Barbara L. Martin, CAS Office of the Dean; and Michael H. Woodburn, son of Kathleen M. Woodburn, School of Pharmacy.
