Palliative care program gets grant

Pitt’s Palliative Care Fellowship Program, housed in the Division of Palliative Care and Medical Ethics, has received a $150,000 grant from the Project on Death in America of the Open Society Institute and the Emily Davie and Joseph S. Kornfeld Foundation.

The two-year grant will:

• prepare clinicians for an academic career in palliative medicine;

• teach the major areas of knowledge and skills covered by palliative medicine training;

• combine patient care experience with rigorous training in clinical research, and

• afford the opportunity to earn an M.S. in clinical research from the Clinical Research Training Program.

The Palliative Care Program was established in 1998 and provides comprehensive, coordinated services to terminally ill patients and their families. The service emphasizes relief from pain and other distressing symptoms, integration of physical, psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care, and development of a support system.
