2003 marathon increases prize money

The 2003 UPMC/City of Pittsburgh Marathon has increased its prize money for the top marathon finishers. The marathon will be run May 4.

The first-place male and female prizes have been increased from $10,000 to $15,000 each. The $15,000 prizes include a $2,500 bonus for the winning male if he runs the marathon in 2:12 or faster and $2,500 for the winning female if she clocks 2:32 or better. If the winning male or female does not beat the bonus time, he and she will still win $12,500 for first place. The second-place prizes have been increased from $5,000 to $7,500 each.

The third-place prize for both men and women will be $3,000; fourth place, $2,000; fifth place, $1,000; sixth place, $500, and seventh place, $250.

In the wheelchair marathon division, the total prize package is set at $7,500.

In the male and female elite masters marathon categories, for runners age 40 and older, there will be $500 first-place prizes; $250 second-place prizes, and $125 third-place prizes. The masters prize money can be cumulative with the open elite money, if applicable.

The marathon will award the first male and female marathon finishers who reside in the city of Pittsburgh each with a $500 prize; second-place, $250, and third-place, $125. The first male and female marathon finishers who live in Pennsylvania each will win $500; second-place, $250, and third-place, $125. The prize money earned in the Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania categories, is sponsored by the local Chrysler Jeep dealers.
