Highest-paid contractors also on IRS forms

In addition to disclosing salary information, IRS Form 990s list the five independent contractors that received the most money from employers during FY 2001-02.

For Pitt, those contractors included:

• Computer consultant IT Convergence of San Francisco ($1,039,394) for work on Pitt’s new Human Resources and payroll information systems.

• Investment advisers Capital Guardian Trust Co. of New York City ($930,688) and TCW Asset Management Co. of Los Angeles ($845,641) for help in managing Pitt’s endowment.

• Architects IKM, Inc. of Pittsburgh ($774,152) and Payette Associates, Inc. of Boston ($725,195) for design work and consultation for the McGowan Center for Artificial Organ Development building and the Biomedical Science Tower 3, respectively.

Pitt paid 72 other contractors, not listed in the IRS document, more than $50,000 each for professional services.

The five contractors that received the most money last year from UPMC Health System included:

• Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, US LLC of New York City ($13,110,000) for consulting services.

• Managed Care Advisory of Pittsburgh ($4,998,345) for management services. This dollar amount included the salaries of UPMC President Jeffrey Romoff and other top UPMC executives.

• Klett, Rooney, Lieber and Schorling of Pittsburgh ($4,488,295); Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, LLP of Washington, D.C. ($1,385,705), and Buchanan Ingersoll of Pittsburgh ($1,384,754) for legal services.

UPMC Health System paid 22 other contractors, not listed in the IRS document, more than $50,000 each for professional services.

The five contractors that received the most money last year from the University of Pittsburgh Physicians (UPP) practice plan included:

• Pamela and Arthur Toth of Wexford, Pa., ($385,492) for transcription services.

• Deloitte and Touche, LLP of Pittsburgh ($302,664) for consulting services.

• Burt Hill Kosar Rittlemann Associates of Butler, Pa., ($226,238) for architectural and engineering services.

• Loren Pulliam of Pittsburgh ($129,337) and Bret Hayford of Altoona, Pa., ($119,732) for certified registered nurse anesthetist services.

UPP also paid eight contractors, not listed in the IRS document, more than $50,000 each for professional services.
