Pitt trustees elect five new members and re-elect five others

In addition to electing Ralph J. Cappy as board chairperson, Pitt trustees June 19 elected five new members and re-elected five others.

New members included:

• Frederick W. Hill of New York, executive vice president and director of corporate marketing and communications of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.

Hill joined Chase Manhattan in 1997, prior to its merger with J.P. Morgan & Co. He is director-at-large of Pitt’s Alumni Association and a member of the School of Law Board of Visitors. Hill was an adjunct professor at Pitt for 11 years and received multiple teaching excellence awards. He earned a B.A. degree in administration of justice through Pitt’s College of General Studies (CGS) in 1975 and a J.D. from Pitt’s law school in 1978.

• Ronald A. Magnuson, vice president of consumer affairs for Allegheny Power and chairperson of the advisory board of Pitt’s Greensburg campus.

Magnuson has worked at Allegheny Power for 22 years. He has been a member of the Pitt-Greensburg board since 1995 and was elected chairperson in 2002. He is vice chair of the Energy Association of Pennsylvania and serves on the boards of the Regional Industrial Development Corporation, the Western Division of the Pennsylvania Economy League and the Pennsylvania Economy League State Board.

• F. James McCarl III of Sewickley, retired president and chief executive officer of McCarl’s Inc., a mechanical engineering contracting company that is a wholly owned subsidiary of PPL Corp.

McCarl earned a B.A. in economics through CGS in 1973. He is a member of the boards of visitors for CGS and the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business/College of Business Administration. A 2002 Distinguished Alumni Fellow, McCarl received the Pitt Volunteer of the Year Award in 1993 and was named a CGS distinguished alumnus in 1988. He is a director of the Blackhawk-Neff Electric Co., a trustee of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and a director and member of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s executive committee.

• Richard W. Roeder of Titusville, Pa., a senior partner with Roeder & Rothschild and chairperson of the Pitt Titusville campus advisory board.

In addition to serving in the law firm of Roeder & Rothschild, Roeder is a trustee of the John Nesbit Rees and Sarah Henne Rees Charitable Foundation. A member of the Pitt-Titusville board since 1980, he was elected board chair in 1995. He previously served as a Pitt trustee from 1995 to 1997 and from 1999 to 2001.

• Burton M. Tansky of Dallas, Tex., president and chief executive officer of Neiman Marcus Group.

Tansky also has held senior management positions at Bergdorf Goodman, Saks & Co. and other national retail establishments. A Pitt Legacy Laureate and the recipient of Pitt’s Alumni Association Award of Distinction in 1990, he earned a B.A. in history through CGS in 1960.

Re-elected as Pitt trustees were Cappy; Michael A. Bryson of Sewickley, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Mellon Financial Corp.; Alfred L. Moyé of San Mateo, Calif., retired senior university affairs consultant for Hewlett-Packard Co.; John H. Pelusi Jr. of Allison Park, president and chief executive officer of Holliday Fenoglio Fowler, L.P., and William E. Strickland of Pittsburgh, president and chief executive officer of Manchester Bidwell Corp.
