Magee launches patient navigator program

The American Cancer Society recently launched its patient navigator program at Magee-Womens Hospital to assist cancer patients in negotiating the health care system. The program is being supported by AstraZeneca.

The patient navigator program connects a patient to a cancer education and support specialist who serves as a personal guide to patients and caregivers as they face psychosocial, emotional and financial challenges. The service is free and confidential, and places an emphasis on assisting the medically underserved.

According to American Cancer Society estimates, more than 74,000 people in Pennsylvania were diagnosed with cancer in 2009. Patient navigators connect patients and caregivers with the most appropriate programs and services to help improve each individual’s access to health care and to help them on their journey to get well. Patient navigators can provide help throughout the disease continuum — from the time of diagnosis, through treatment, into survivorship. Navigators also are able to increase treatment compliance and followup care.
