Capital campaign kick-off approaches

On the eve of the formal launching of Pitt's capital campaign, the chancellor gave a brief preview this week to members of Senate Council.

Mark A. Nordenberg said that over the past three years, during the "silent phase" of the campaign, Pitt has raised enough money to fund 120 endowed scholarships and fellowships, 20 endowed chairs and 10 endowed professorships.

Pitt plans to formally launch its campaign Oct. 27 and 28 with "Discovery Weekend," a series of on-campus events, including walking tours, educational lectures and seminars, and a grand finale buffet and celebration event.

"In our attempt to strengthen the links of academic programs with our best friends, and possible new best friends, we'll have 30 distinguished graduates on campus to interact with students in the classroom," Nordenberg said. "We'll also have some 1,500 guests participating in the weekend's events."

The chancellor said a public announcement on the campaign's status will come later this month.
