Computing Services staff win national awards

Pitt's computing services recently won three awards in a national competition honoring outstanding publications produced by university computing centers.

The Association of Computing Machinery, Special Interest Group for University and College Computer Services (SIGUCCS) annual competition recognizes both print and electronic media publications.

Pitt's Computing Services and Systems Development (CSSD) web site took third place in the computing services (large school) category and second place in both printed how-to guides (co-runner-up with the University of Colorado) and promotional materials for large schools.

According to Jeffrey Cepull of the project management group at CSSD, "The web site is designed to provide support and timely information to students, faculty and staff regarding the University of Pittsburgh technology resources."

The CSSD site also posts details about campus information technology projects and provides self-help resources, such as the Pitt Knowledgebase, he said.

The web site project's development and implementation team included CSSD staff Brian Hart, Rosie Lucia, Erin Thomas, Laura Valentine and Jinx Walton.

The guide directs students through the process of installing an Ethernet card in either a Windows 95/98/2000 or Macintosh device. CSSD staff Cindy Cummings, Steve Ewing, Bob Mueser, Rob Reeder and Andrew Steiner worked on the project.

Computing Services and Systems Development also won second place for producing two promotional pieces: the Authorized Academic Java Campus Program flyer and brochure. CSSD staff members Jo Ann Keslar, Daniel Vlad and Jinx Walton teamed with University Graphics and Marketing to produce the publications.
