Children's book drive slated Jan. 15-Feb. 9

The Pitt Volunteer Pool, in conjunction with Jumpstart Pittsburgh and the Greater Pittsburgh Alliance of Black School Educators, is collecting children's books to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. The drive will run from Jan. 15 to Feb. 9.

Jumpstart Pittsburgh is an AmeriCorps literacy program that pairs Pitt student volunteers with inner-city children.

Donated gently used and new children's books will be given to several schools in the Hill District as well as to literacy-promoting programs in Homestead and on the South Side.

Some books will go directly to children and others will remain at the learning sites for general use.

There is a particular need for preschool- and elementary school-level materials. Books reflecting themes of diversity, unity, peace and cooperation, as well as works on King's life are especially welcome.

Books can be dropped off until Feb. 9 in the green collection boxes at the following Pittsburgh campus locations:

* Cathedral of Learning, ground floor elevator lobby;

* Craig Hall, main lobby;

* Graduate School of Public Health, main lobby;

* Hillman Library, main lobby;

* Information Sciences building, 5th floor lobby;

* Langley Hall, library lobby;

* Mervis Hall, main lobby;

* Posvar Hall, main elevator lobby, Bouquet Street lobby and UCIS lobby, 4th floor;
