United Way Day of Caring 2011

About 300 faculty, staff and students from Pitt volunteered to lend a hand with service projects in Oakland, Lawrence-ville, Hazelwood, the Hill District and East Liberty as part of the 20th annual Pitt Day of Caring.

In bucket brigade fashion, a team of volunteers retrieved bricks left behind when homes in the Oakcliffe neighborhood were razed in 1914. The reclaimed bricks will become part of an arbor at the entrance to the Oakcliffe Greenway near the corner of Lawn and Hamlet streets. David Panasiuk of the Oakcliffe Housing Club hands bricks up to Ece Ulus of the English Language Institute.

Painting was a big part of yesterday’s Day of Caring activities. Marlon Jones of the Graduate School of Public Health prepares an office wall at People’s Oakland.
