Hertel named University registrar

Ralph Hertel has been named University registrar, effective last month. He had been serving as interim registrar since December 2010.

The Registrar’s office has responsibility for student records, course and classroom scheduling, registration and transcript certification.

Prior to his appointment as interim University registrar, Hertel served as associate University registrar, with oversight of the technical and records/grades/graduation areas and responsibility for the Registrar’s business functions. In that role he led the classroom management team and the PeopleSoft student administration management team.

He also has served on several University committees, including the enrollment management committee, the University athletic compliance committee and the academic calendar committee. He is the University representative to the Pennsylvania transfer and articulation oversight committee.

Hertel started working at the University as a systems analyst in 1978. In 1983 he transferred to the Registrar’s office, continuing his work as a systems analyst.

Later, he was promoted to the position of manager of information resources, where he served until his promotion in 1994 to associate registrar. In that role, he managed several areas, including information resources, records and graduation, budgeting and personnel and purchasing.

Hertel graduated cum laude in 1977 from Robert Morris University with a BS in business management.

Hertel succeeds long-time registrar Samuel D. Conte, who retired in December 2010.

The announcement of Hertel’s appointment was made by Provost Patricia Beeson.

“Ralph has demonstrated that he has the necessary skills to manage effectively the important work of the Office of the University Registrar, and I look forward to continuing our work together at the University,” Beeson said.
