UPMC plans information programs on bioterrorism

UPMC Health System is hosting a series of free public programs on bioterrorism.

The sessions, entitled "Bioterrorism: What You Need to Know," will feature UPMC bioterrorism and infection control experts who will address questions about biological agents, such as anthrax and smallpox, and will highlight how UPMC is preparing for these threats.

"The specter of bioterror-ism has reached the United States and there is much fear, along with misinformation, about biological and chemical agents which may be used against the population," said Loren Roth, senior vice president of medical services for UPMC.

"We want to help educate the community with our cadre of nationally recognized experts in this area who will answer questions and present objective, factual information on what people should know about this new threat," he added.

Among those expected to participate are Michael Allswede, visiting associate professor, section chief, special emergency response unit, Department of Emergency Medicine, School of Medicine; Karen Byers, an infectious disease specialist, and William Pasculle, a pathologist.
