UPMC president and CEO Jeffrey A. Romoff again topped the list of the health care system’s highest-paid employees in 2010.

In an annual federal form 990 tax filing required of nonprofit organizations, Romoff’s compensation was reported as $5,975,462. That amount included $959,210 in base compensation, $3,733,000 in bonus and incentive compensation, $833,373 in other reportable compensation, $427,538 in retirement and other deferred compensation and $22,341 in nontaxable benefits.

The form 990 filings released this month are based on the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2011, but, under recent Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requirements, the associated compensation figures are reported for calendar year 2010.

In its IRS reporting, UPMC provides one form 990 for the UPMC parent organization and a consolidated form 990 for the UPMC Group. According to a UPMC statement, the UPMC Group includes only those UPMC tax-exempt entities that fall under IRS requirements for filing, as well as financial information on the parent organization. UPMC reported that 2,906 employees earned more than $100,000 in reportable compensation from the organization.

Highest-paid non-officers

Five physicians were listed as UPMC’s highest-paid employees, excluding officers, directors and trustees. Compensation includes base compensation, bonus and incentive compensation, other reportable compensation, retirement and other deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits.

The five were:

• Neurosurgeon Ghassan Bejjani — $2,861,696.

• Neurosurgeon Richard Spiro — $1,980,472.

• Orthopaedic surgeon Mark Rodosky — $1,880,826.

• Neurosurgeon Adnan Abla — $1,515,220.

• Cardiothoracic surgeon Victor Morell — $1,345,117.

Key employees

In addition to Romoff, those specified as current key employees included in the UPMC 990 filing were:

The UPMC filing included compensation for members of the University of Pittsburgh Physicians faculty-physician partnership.

UPP member physicians also were Pitt faculty. Amounts listed represent pay for UPMC duties and do not include any University pay.

Compensation includes base compensation, bonus and incentive compensation, other reportable compensation, retirement and deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits, as well as compensation from related organizations, where applicable.

Among those reported on the UPMC 990 form compensated by UPP were UPMC department and division administrators:

UPMC also reported that a total of 147 independent contractors received more than $100,000 each in compensation in 2010.
