6 presidential candidates visit Bradford campus

The committee searching for a new president of Pitt's Bradford campus is inviting six candidates for campus visits. Candidates will meet with University officials, as well as Bradford campus faculty, staff and students.

The candidates are:

* Thomas F. Armstrong, professor of history and special assistant to the president, Texas Wesleyan University;

* Pamela M. Balch, vice president for academic affairs, Bethany College (WV);

* Leslie Ellen Brown, vice president and dean of faculty, Ripon College (WI);

* Nicholas Henry, professor of political science, Georgia Southern University;

* Michael T. Marsden, provost and vice president for academic affairs and research, Eastern Kentucky University, and

* Hubert Maultsby, provost and dean of faculty, Norwich University (VT).

Following the candidates' campus visits, the search committee expects to present a list of four unranked candidates to Provost James V. Maher on April 23, according to Joan Cutone of the Provost's office, who is staffing the search committee.

The anticipated date of appointment is Sept. 1, 2002. Pitt regional campus presidents report to the provost.

The new president will succeed Richard E. McDowell, who last fall announced he would be stepping down June 30 after 29 years as president.

McDowell will return to teaching in the biology department at Pitt-Bradford following a sabbatical in 2002. He also will work to expand and advance the programs of the college's Allegheny Institute of Natural History.
