Trustees OK hikes in student fees

The University will increase its computing and network services fee from $110 to $130 per term for each full-time student, and from $30 to $65 per term for each part-time student, effective next fall at all Pitt campuses.

Money generated by the fee hike will fund continuing improvements in Pitt computing programs, services and facilities, University officials said. The trustees on June 20 approved that increase, along with the following student fee hikes at individual campuses. Increases will go into effect next fall.

* The Pittsburgh campus security, safety and transportation fee will go from $55 to $75 per term for each full-time and part-time student. Pitt officials said the hike will cover an expected increase in the University's annual payment to the Port Authority of Allegheny County for Pitt's ride-for-free service for Oakland campus students (see page 4), as well as continuing improvements in campus lighting and an anticipated increase in campus shuttle use related to the Petersen Events Center. "Under current conditions, it is expected that the $75 fee could remain in place for six fiscal years," read a background statement distributed to trustees.

* The Bradford campus student recreation fee will increase from $40 to $70 per term for full-time students. Part-time students (who previously didn't pay a recreation fee) will be charged $15 for each fall and spring term. Pitt officials said the increase will cover costs related to expanded recreation facilities at the Pitt-Bradford Sport and Fitness Center, scheduled to open this fall.

* The intercollegiate athletics fee at the Greensburg campus will rise from $55 to $65 per term for full-time students, and from $10 to $13 per term for part-time students for each fall and spring term. The fee is the primary revenue source for the campus's intercollegiate athletics program.

* The Titusville campus student athletic fee for full-time students will increase from $30 to $45 for each fall and spring term. The fee for part-time students will remain at $10 each fall and spring term. The increase is expected to cover inflation and costs for referees' fees, sports insurance and transportation.
