Obituary: Julian Andelman

andelmanjJulian B. Andelman, who retired as emeritus professor of environmental and occupational health in the Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH) in 1995, died Jan. 29, 2013. He was 81.

Andelman earned an AB in biochemical sciences from Harvard College in 1952 and a PhD in physical chemistry from Polytechnic University of New York in 1960. He was a post-doctoral fellow in New York University’s chemistry department beginning that year, and joined Bell Telephone Laboratories in New York City as a member of the technical staff in 1961.

In 1963, Andelman began his career at Pitt in GSPH’s Department of Public Health Practice as an assistant professor of water chemistry, rising to associate professor in 1967.

Six years later, he became a professor of environmental health in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, adding the post of associate director of the Center for Environmental Epidemiology in 1984. That year he also received a secondary appointment as professor in the School of Engineering’s civil engineering department.

During his years at Pitt, he also was a visiting lecturer at Harvard and a visiting faculty member at University College London.

Andelman’s published research was extensive, appearing most recently in Science of the Total Environment, Environmental Epidemiology, Water Research, APCA (Air Pollution Control Association) Journal, Atmospheric Environment, Environmental Science and Technology, and the Journal of Exposure Analysis and Environmental Epidemiology. He also presented his research at numerous academic institutions around the world.

Andelman conducted research on the hazards of wastewater, drinking water, air pollution and building interiors for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Park Service.

He was the lead editor of the book “Health Effects from Hazardous Waste Sites,” published in 1987.

Andelman was a committee member for the Second International Congress on Environmental Information and Communication in Bayreuth, Germany, and the first meeting of the International Society for Exposure Analysis. He also served on EPA’s committees on research and peer review and on ground water recharge.

Among his extensive University service, Andelman was a member of Faculty Assembly 1984-87 and 1991-94 and served on Senate Council 1993-94. Among his committee service, he was elected as a member of the benefits and welfare committee of the Senate 1998-2000 and 2001-05. He also represented the University as a member of the board of the Ohio River Basin Consortium for Research and Education, and to the Pennsylvania Office of Hazardous and Toxic Waste Management.

Within the public health school, he was president of the GSPH faculty senate 1982-83 and served on its executive committee 1965-78 and 1986-92.

In 1986, he became a member of Delta Omega, the public health honor society, and received a community citation of merit from the Allegheny County Board of Commissioners in 1988.

He is survived by wife, Barbara; daughter and son-in-law Karen and Mike Lasday; daughter and son-in-law Lauren and Mike Allen; sister Davida Andelman and partner Janet Jones; and four grandchildren, Frances, Josh, Bailey, and Brooke.
