Obituary: Fred Moore

50yrstaffEnglish,Moore,rosenberg,Nordenberg copyFred Martin Moore Sr., who served on the Pitt staff for 53 years until he retired last June, died Nov. 28, 2012. He was 71.

Moore joined the University in October 1959, first working in the crystallography department in the College of Arts and Sciences.

In 1971 he moved to the Department of Radiation Health in the Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH) as an electronics technician.

In 1994, when radiation health merged with the industrial hygiene department to form the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, Moore moved to the radiation safety office, which was created as a nonacademic department. There, Moore worked as an electronics specialist doing radiation detection and measurement-instrument repair and calibration.

Moore was a member of the Staff Advisory Board (the forerunner of the Staff Association Council) during the 1970s and also served for many years as a fire marshal for GSPH.

“I first met Fred in 1980 when I came to GSPH as a grad student,” said Michael Sheetz, now director of the radiation safety office and a radiology faculty member. “Then I worked with him in the radiation safety office starting in 1982, and technically became his supervisor in 2007 when I became director. Fred was very kindhearted, never had a negative word about others and always had his door open to chat with anyone who wanted to stop in. He was very dedicated to his work and always completed the task, even if it meant staying late. He will be missed by all who knew him.”

Said Pat Barus, administrator in Moore’s office: “Fred was a very humble and kind person. There were many things he did for people that he never spoke about. I found Fred to be a great friend and co-worker. Fred is very much missed.”

In 1971, Moore earned an associate degree from the Pennsylvania Technical Institute.

Moore lived in the Hill District, where he was a member of the African American Historical and Genealogical Society of Pittsburgh and served on the trustee and usher boards of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his wife, Rosa Miott-Harper; sons Fred Martin Moore Jr. and Derek Moore; son and daughter-in-law James and Nicole Moore; daughter Sherdina Harper; daughter-in-law Yvette Moore; mother Flora Benton; brother and sister-in-law Evans Sr. and Inez Moore; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son Dwayne Moore and his brother William Moore.
