Sodexo tops Pitt contractor list in FY12

An annual report to the state on how each of Pennsylvania’s state-related universities spends unrestricted and auxiliary fund dollars shows that Sodexo has bumped Duquesne Light for the top spot on the list of Pitt contractors in fiscal year 2012.

The information disclosure of the state-related universities, mandated under the state’s public school code, is a condition of state appropriation funding for Pitt, Penn State, Lincoln and Temple universities.

The state-related schools must list expenditures of more than $1,000 for goods and services contracts that use unrestricted (general) fund or auxiliary fund dollars.

The institutions also must report their revenue and expenditure budgets for the current fiscal year and their actual revenue and expenditures for the prior year as well as median and mean salaries by academic rank and classification for administrators, staff, clerical and technical service employees, in addition to information on benefits, retirement policies and employee tuition discount programs.

Top contractors

Of Pitt’s 19 vendor contracts of $2 million or more, Sodexo, which manages dining and catering services on campus, topped the list at nearly $29.4 million, surpassing former No. 1 contractor Duquesne Light, which fell to the No. 2 spot with contracts of more than $29.13 million.

Contracts of $2 million or more totaled more than $142.24 million, or 45.7 percent of the $311.48 million in Pitt’s vendor contracts accounted for in the report.

Contracts between $750,000 and $2 million, totaling $45.41 million (14.6 percent of the total Pitt reported) went to 37 vendors in FY12.

In addition, the University reported $123.82 million in vendor contracts of less than $750,000, making up 39.7 percent of the total.

More than two-thirds of Pitt’s contracts — $200.51 million, or 64.4 percent of the $311.48 million total — went to out-of-state vendors, while nearly $111 million, or 35.6 percent, went to Pennsylvania vendors.

By expenditure type, contracts for professional services made up the largest category, with nearly $87.95 million, or 28.2 percent of the total. Contracts for supplies and equipment totaled $57.96 million (18.6 percent of the total), followed by utilities contracts of $53.66 million (17.2 percent of the total).

Full-time faculty

Pitt reported 5,397 full-time faculty members in FY12, up from 5,253 reported for FY11.

Among them were 971 full professors (up from 948 in FY11), 1,062 associate professors (up from 1,019), 1,761 assistant professors (up from 1,698), 294 instructors (up from 290) and 1,309 other full-time faculty (up from 1,298).

According to the report, full professor salaries in FY12 averaged $124,460 (up from $120,622), associate professors averaged $81,855 (up from $80,025), assistant professors averaged $61,720 (up from $61,164), instructors averaged $46,294 (up from $44,379) and other faculty averaged $38,100 (up from $37,082).

Full-time staff

Pitt reported 7,038 full-time staff in FY12, up from 6,947. Among them, 620 were categorized as executive/administrative/managerial with average salaries of $104,914 (up from 603 with salaries averaging $103,038); 4,549 were categorized as other professional non-faculty with salaries averaging $45,857 (up from 4,491 with salaries averaging $44,709); 627 were categorized as clerical/secretarial with salaries averaging $27,141 (down from 647 with salaries averaging $26,656) and 1,242 were categorized as technical, skilled, service and other staff with average salaries of $34,153 (up from 1,206 with salaries that averaged $33,692).
