Pitt-UPMC docs make Best Doctors list

More than 300 physicians in 36 specialties from Pitt’s School of Medicine and UPMC are included in the list of “Best Doctors” in the Pittsburgh area compiled by Best Doctors, Inc., of Boston, provider of information about the best medical care available.

The current listing is the result of a survey in which more than 30,000 doctors throughout the United States were asked the question, “If a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer them?” Evaluations of the doctors named — some of them by hundreds of their peers — are weighed, scored and filtered for bias. Only those physicians who earned the consensus support of their peers were included.

Specialties in which UPMC physicians are named include allergy and immunology, anesthesiology, cardiovascular disease, clinical pharmacology, colon and rectal surgery, dermatology, endocrinology and metabolism, family medicine, hand surgery, gastroenterology, geriatric medicine, infectious disease, internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology, nephrology, neurological surgery, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, pathology, pediatric specialist, pediatrics (general), physical medicine and rehabilitation, plastic surgery, psychiatry, pulmonary and critical care medicine, radiation oncology, radiology, rheumatology, sleep medicine, surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic surgery and urology.

UPMC is the largest integrated health care system in Pennsylvania. More than 4,000 physicians have privileges at UPMC hospitals including about 1,950 employed physicians.

“UPMC is proud to have a remarkably large group of physicians in so many specialties recognized as among the best doctors in America,” said Marshall Webster, president and chief executive officer of the University of Pittsburgh Physicians. “Their unique skills and expertise contribute to making UPMC a truly world class academic medical center, offering the very best care to patients in western Pennsylvania, and also nationally and internationally.”
