Winner of Drue Heinz prize announced

Ardia Bernardi has been named winner of the Drue Heinz Prize for Literature for her book of short stories, "In the Gathering Woods." The University of Pittsburgh Press will publish the manuscript in October.

Bernardi's book contains a cast of charaters who come from the same Italian ancestors, but whose stories come at the reader unbound by space and time.

Bernardi, of Worcester, Massachusetts, also is the author of "Houses With Names: The Italian Immigrants of Highwood, Illinois." She has received an Editors' Prize from the Missouri Review, the James Fellowship for Novel from the Heekin Group Foundation and the 1999 Bakeless Prize from the Bread Loaf Writers Conference.
