How salaries break down in FAS

Average faculty salaries in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) ranged last year from $26,192 for instructors in the humanities division to $84,514 for full professors in the social sciences division.

Average and median nine-month salaries for employees in FAS and other Pitt units as of Oct. 31, 1999 appeared in a recent report by the University's Office of Institutional Research.

The average salary among FAS's 222 humanities division faculty members was $53,747. The median was $48,803.

The total included 75 professors ($78,950 average, $73,086 median), 73 associate professors ($48,984 average, $48,842 median), 27 assistant professors ($40,369 average, $41,303 median), 16 instructors ($26,192 average, $25,369 median) and 31 "other" instructors, lecturers, etc. whose primary job class is not a professional faculty rank ($29,860 mean, $27,940 median).

Among the 246 faculty in the FAS natural sciences division, the average salary was $59,048. The median was $53,389.

That included 97 professors ($80,383 average, $78,071 median), 55 associate professors ($55,283 average, $52,325 median), 56 assistant professors ($43,721 average, $44,744 median), seven instructors ($30,072 average, $28,636 median) and 31 in the "other" category ($33,202 average, $32,000 median).

In the FAS social sciences division, 110 faculty earned an average salary of $66,198. The median was $61,603.

That included 47 professors ($84,514 average, $79,464 median), 41 associate professors ($56,774 average, $54,332 median), 17 assistant professors ($46,133 average, $45,472 median) and five in the "other" category ($39,527 average, $36,000 median).

The report did not break down of FAS salaries below the division level. Salaries for faculty with 12-month contracts were converted to standard nine-month academic contracts.

"Salary" as defined by the report included all contract salaries paid by Pitt, whether the source was hard money salary funds, research grants awarded to the University, an endowment or other source.

The highs, lows of average faculty, staff salaries at Pitt

Among the 290 full professors in Pitt's School of Medicine last year, the average nine-month contract salary was $129,851.

Meanwhile, the four technical, skilled and service workers in the School of Education earned average salaries of $15,211 for 12 months' work.

Those highs and lows appear in a recent report by Pitt's Office of Institutional Research in accordance with Pennsylvania's Financial Disclosure Law.

The report reveals the mean (average) and median (the middle point at which an equal number of employees earn more or less) salaries for major ranks of full-time, non-unionized faculty, staff and administrators in each Pitt responsibility unit as of Oct. 31, 1999.

"Salary" as defined by the report includes all contract salaries paid by the University, whether the source was Pitt salary funds, a research grant awarded to Pitt, an endowment or other source.

Salaries of faculty, including those on 12-month contracts, were converted to nine-month contracts. Staff salaries covered 12 months.

The report attributes employees' salaries to the responsibility centers through which their employee records were processed.

To avoid revealing individuals' pay, the report does not list salaries for groups with three or fewer employees.

Staff/administration highs and lows The report divides staff into four categories:

* Executive, administrative and managerial employees.

* Other professionals.

* Secretarial and clerical.

* Technical, skilled and service.

It lists 15 units where executives, administrators and managers earned both mean and median salaries exceeding $60,000. Those units included: The Office of Athletics (six executives, administrators and managers) — $95,606 mean, $72,810 median.

The Office of Budget and Controller (36) — $74,528 mean, $65,820 median.

The Office of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Business (17) — $64,656 mean, $61,476 median.

Computer Services and Systems Development (16) — $66,834 mean, $64,195 median.

The Office of the Chancellor (18) — $102,425 mean, $86,526 median.

Facilities Management (seven) — $79,056 mean, $80,508 median.

The Office of the General Counsel (eight) — $98,418 mean, $89,958 median.

The Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences (six) — $122,030 mean, $147,088 median.

The Office of Human Resources (14) — $71,255 mean, $67,071 median.

School of Medicine Administration (13) — $143,493 mean, $68,256 median.

Network Services (five) — $80,664 mean, $77,946 median.

The Office of the Provost (63) — $93,243 mean, $85,648 median.

The Graduate School of Public Health (nine) — $66,231 mean, $60,144 median.

Student Affairs (14) — $71,721 mean, $68,231 median.

The University Center for Social and Urban Research (nine) — $63,527 mean, $62,946 median.

Fifteen schools and offices employed only one-to-three people in the category of executives, administrators and managers, so the report does not reveal mean and median salaries for those areas.

The following staff groups earned mean and median salaries of less than $20,000:

* Technical, skilled and service workers in the School of Dental Medicine, the School of Education, the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Health Administration, the Office of Human Resources and Student Affairs.

* Secretarial/clerical staff in athletics, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) dean's office, the FAS humanities division, the FAS social sciences division, the Office of Budget and Controller, the Office of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Business, dental medicine, the Greensburg campus, the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, Human Resources, the Johnstown campus, Network Services, the Office of the Provost, the Titusville campus and the University Center for Social and Urban Research.

Faculty highs and lows Professional and Health Sciences schools, especially those with large proportions of senior professors, had the highest-paid faculties. University Library System faculty librarians and faculty at the four regional campuses had the lowest salaries, on average.

Faculties in 10 units earned both mean and median salaries exceeding $60,000: The Katz Graduate School of Business employed 66 faculty members who earned mean and median salaries of $87,241 and $81,530, respectively.

That included 29 professors ($102,538 mean, $96,720 median), 18 associate professors ($71,732 mean, $70,494 median) 19 assistant professors ($78,585 mean, $74,825 median) and three faculty members in "other" ranks whose salaries were not included.

Business was the only school where assistant professors out-earned associate professors in both mean and median salaries, although law school assistant professors were paid larger median salaries than associate professors were in that school.

Katz school Associate Dean Josephine E. Olson explained: "We've been recruiting a number of assistant professors in the last several years. Market starting salaries have been rising rapidly, especially in the disciplines where we have been hiring: finance, information systems, marketing." She added that, "It takes time to eliminate inequities" between professorial ranks.

The School of Engi-neering's 92 faculty members earned $71,375 mean and $66,392 median salaries.

The total included 40 professors ($88,484 mean, $88,320 median), 32 associate professors ($60,810 mean, $63,050 median), 20 assistant professors ($54,060 mean, $55,910 median) and two faculty members in the "other" category.

That included six professors ($73,563 mean, $76,192 median), 13 associate professors ($64,977 mean, $65,025 median) and 11 assistant professors ($54,317 mean, $53,973 median).

The Learning Research and Development Center employed three professors, one associate professor and two assistant professors — not enough in any category for salary numbers by rank. Combined, the six earned $78,951 mean and $79,531 median salaries.

The School of Medicine, Pitt's largest academic unit, employed 1,449 faculty members who earned mean and median salaries of $86,344 and $83,505, respectively.

The 110 faculty in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences social sciences division also earned mean and median salaries exceeding $60,000, as did six faculty members who report to the FAS dean's office. See FAS salaries story on page 4.
