Robert J. Nossen

Former Pitt associate provost and professor Robert J. Nossen, 76, died July 29.

Nossen held faculty and administrative posts at Creighton, Lamar and Bloomsburg universities and the State University College in Fredonia, N.Y., before coming to Pitt in 1972 as associate provost for regional campuses and professor of higher education. He became a professor emeritus in 1985 but continued to serve as an instructional and doctoral adviser and adjunct professor of administration.

Nossen authored several books and edited the Journal and Newsletter of the Pennsylvania Association for Adult Continuing Education. He also was a consultant on East Asian languages and culture. He received Point Park College's Award of Distinction, Slippery Rock University's Educator of the Year Award and an honorary doctor of laws degree from St. John's University in Jamaica, N.Y.

Nossen earned a B.A. in English literature from the University of California at Berkeley and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in the same field from Northwestern University.

He is survived by his wife, Evon Holland Nossen; a brother, Richard A. Nossen; a sister, Phyllis Harley; and nieces and nephews.
