Early retirement update sought

University Senate President Gordon MacLeod plans to ask Chancellor Mark Nordenberg to update Senate Council Sept. 15 on the status of a proposed early retirement incentive plan for faculty.

The proposal was forwarded to Nordenberg in June by a committee of professors and administrators appointed to study early retirement options. Because the plan is expected to significantly impact Pitt budgets (plan proponents say it will save the University millions of dollars in the long run; critics aren't so sanguine), the chancellor has said he wants to present the proposal to the Board of Trustees' budget committee Sept. 30 and then to the full board on Oct. 23.

Many faculty members had hoped to have a retirement incentive plan in place by Sept. 1.

Responding to frustrations expressed by several professors during Monday's Faculty Assembly meeting, MacLeod agreed to ask Nordenberg for a progress report on the plan. The Senate Council meeting is scheduled for 3-5 p.m. in 2P56 Forbes Quadrangle.
