Funds raised for pancreatic cancer research

Jump shots, massages, raffle tickets and members of the Pittsburgh Steelers combined to help the Arenson family of the South Hills to raise money to benefit pancreatic cancer research at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI). The third annual Hoops for a Cure exhibition basketball game, sponsored by the Nathan S. Arenson Fund for Pancreatic Cancer Research, was held at Chartiers Valley High School last month. The event featured a squad of C-V alumni against a team of Steelers, with the alums nipping the footballers 66-63.

Olivera Finn, director of UPCI's Immunology Program, accepted a check for $3,100 from Jamie's Salon in Upper St. Clair, which held a month-long "salon-a-thon" and donated money raised from salon services. Andrew Stockey, sportscaster at WTAE-TV and master of ceremonies for the Hoops event, raffled off two tickets to next year's Super Bowl and other prizes, to add to the proceeds.

The fund honors Nathan Arenson, who died of pancreatic cancer in 1995. The fund has raised more than $50,000. Pancreatic cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. UPCI is testing a vaccine targeted against pancreatic cancer cells.
