New director of UCSUR to be insider, provost says

The new director of the University Center for Social and Urban Research (UCSUR) will be hired from inside Pitt.

Provost James Maher has announced an internal search for a new, permanent UCSUR director, to begin work Sept. 1.

Richard Schulz has been interim director since 1995, when former director Vijai Singh accepted Chancellor Mark Nordenberg's invitation to serve as interim (and later, permanent) associate chancellor.

UCSUR conducts and facilitates interdisciplinary social science research on regional and national issues of public policy.

Vice Provost for Research George Klinzing chairs the UCSUR director search committee. Other committee members include: Morton Coleman, of the School of Social Work; Christina Groark, Office of Child Development; Steven Manners, UCSUR; Sharon Nelson-Le Gall, psychology department, Faculty of Arts and Sciences; Edmund Ricci, Graduate School of Public Health, and Darlene Thiel, UCSUR. Thalia Jones, assistant to the provost, will provide staff support to the committee.

Pitt personnel interested in applying, or nominating others, for the job should write to Klinzing at 801 Cathedral of Learning.

"The director of UCSUR must coordinate research efforts in the social and urban research and policies areas," Provost Maher said. "An intimate knowledge of the region, the city of Pittsburgh and the University itself is required because of the director's close interactions not only with faculty from various disciplines within the institution, but also with foundations, government and industry."
