Read to succeed

"If students don't read, they don't learn. It's as simple as that," said Gov. Tom Ridge, announcing his "Read to Succeed" initiative at the University Child Development Center yesterday. The four-year, $100 million program will provide assistance for Pennsylvania students to become skilled readers by third grade. The state Department of Education grants will be available to school districts on a matching basis, one local dollar for each two dollars of state funding.

The governor read passages to a group of first and second graders from "The Giving Tree," a gift to Ridge from the center's director, Sherry Cleary.
