Dixon top earner here again in 2013

Men’s basketball head coach James P. Dixon II topped the list of Pitt’s highest-paid non-officer employees in 2013. According to the University’s recently released fiscal year 2014 IRS form 990, Dixon’s calendar year 2013 compensation totaled $3,234,437.

It was Dixon’s third year in a row and eighth year overall as Pitt’s top-paid employee since his arrival in 2003.

Dixon’s compensation was made up of $1,384,755 in base compensation, $1,672,500 in bonus and incentive compensation, $31,183 in other reportable compensation, $130,600 in retirement and other deferred compensation and $15,399 in nontaxable benefits.

Rounding out the five highest-paid non-officers in 2013 were:

• Head football coach Paul Chryst, who left Pitt in December 2014 for the University of Wisconsin, earned $1,684,720. His compensation was made up of $1,042,079 in base compensation, $583,333 in bonus and incentive compensation, $22,526 in other reportable compensation, $20,400 in retirement and other deferred compensation and $16,382 in nontaxable benefits.

• Athletic director Steven C. Pederson, who was fired in December 2014, earned $892,950. His compensation was made up of $588,620 in base compensation, $241,667 in bonus and incentive compensation, $11,510 in other reportable compensation, $36,973 in retirement and other deferred compensation and $14,180 in nontaxable benefits.

• University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute director Nancy E. Davidson earned $704,712. Her compensation was made up of $662,990 in base compensation, $5,000 in bonus and incentive compensation, $600 in other reportable compensation, $30,600 in retirement and other deferred compensation and $5,522 in nontaxable benefits.

• Medical school vice dean Steven L. Kanter earned $542,703.

His compensation was made up of $445,340 in base compensation, $27,929 in bonus and incentive compensation, $600 in other reportable compensation, $54,108 in retirement and other deferred compensation and $14,726 in nontaxable benefits.

The IRS requires tax-exempt organizations to disclose financial information each year, including compensation of officers, directors, trustees, key employees and the five highest compensated employees.

While the University’s most recently released IRS form 990 reports financial information based on the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2014, compensation figures are reported for the 2013 calendar year.

The University reported that 1,751 people, including those named in the IRS form 990, received compensation of $100,000 or more in 2013. In 2012, the University reported that 1,776 people were above the $100,000 threshold. (See May 29, 2014, University Times.)

University officers

Nine current or former University officers were included in the report. They are:

• Arthur S. Levine, senior vice chancellor of Health Sciences and dean of the School of Medicine, earned $1,100,252 ($798,682 in base compensation, $186,000 in bonus and incentive compensation, $70,962 in other reportable compensation, $30,600 in retirement and other deferred compensation and $14,008 in nontaxable benefits.)

• Chancellor and CEO Mark A. Nordenberg, who stepped down from that position in 2014, earned $849,417 ($583,836 in base compensation, $125,683 in other reportable compensation, $70,662 in retirement and other deferred compensation and $69,236 in nontaxable benefits.)

• General counsel and Executive Vice Chancellor Jerome Cochran, who retired in December 2014, earned $563,774 ($499,354 in base compensation, $27,002 in other reportable compensation, $23,832 in retirement and other deferred compensation and $13,586 in nontaxable benefits.)

• Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor Patricia E. Beeson earned $452,653 ($380,491 in base compensation, $13,931 in other reportable compensation, $45,990 in retirement and other deferred compensation and $12,241 in nontaxable benefits.)

• Treasurer Amy Krueger Marsh earned $476,595 ($408,703 in base compensation, $15,268 in other reportable compensation, $36,977 in retirement and other deferred compensation and $15,647 in nontaxable benefits.)

• Chief Financial Officer Arthur G. Ramicone earned $454,979 ($360,298 in base compensation, $26,883 in other reportable compensation, $52,892 in retirement and other deferred compensation and $14,906 in nontaxable benefits.)

• Former provost and senior vice chancellor James V. Maher, who stepped down from that position in 2010, earned $331,528 ($290,472 in base compensation, $25,921 in other reportable compensation and $15,135 in nontaxable benefits.)

• General counsel P. Jerome Richey earned $326,381 ($299,167 in base compensation, $7,796 in other reportable compensation, $19,264 in retirement and other deferred compensation and $154 in nontaxable benefits.)

• B. Jean Ferketish, secretary of the Board of Trustees, earned $271,590 ($214,908 in base compensation, $9,803 in other reportable compensation, $31,973 in retirement and other deferred compensation and $14,906 in nontaxable benefits.)

Family members

Institutions must disclose transactions with interested persons, including pay for employees who are family members of current or former officers, directors, trustees or key employees.

Receiving compensation from Pitt in 2013 were:

• Joshua Cochran of Public Safety, who earned $78,387. He is related to then-Executive Vice Chancellor Jerome Cochran.
• Erin Nordenberg of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, who earned $42,701. She is related to Chancellor Emeritus Mark Nordenberg.
• Anita P. Courcoulas, a professor of surgery, who earned $217,287. She is related to trustee Ira J. Gumberg.
• Maryjean Lovett of Alumni Relations, who earned $38,267. She is related to trustee Robert G. Lovett.
• Robin Maier, who earned  $65,261, and John Maier, who earned $79,615. The two employees, both of family medicine, are related to Provost Emeritus James V. Maher.
• Katherine Costa of Student Life, who earned $32,536. Costa is related to trustee Martha Hartle Munsch.
• Jason Richards, who earned $38,410, and Lindsay Richards, who earned $126,795. The two, both of Athletics, are related to trustee Thomas Richards.

Highest-paid contractors

The University reported that 667 independent contractors received more than $100,000 in compensation from Pitt in 2013, up from 623 a year earlier.

The top five in 2013 were:

• Food service contractor Sodexo, $31,948,750.
• Construction contractor PJ Dick, $21,829,154.
• Construction contractor Mascaro Construction, $18,759,545.
• Construction contractor BPA II, $12,601,364.
• Construction contractor McKamish, $9,865,189.
