Romoff’s 2013 compensation totaled almost $6.5 million

Jeffrey A. Romoff, UPMC president and CEO, was the health care system’s highest-paid employee in 2013, with compensation totaling $6,449,614.

In an annual IRS form 990 filing, UPMC Group reported Romoff’s compensation as $961,487 in base compensation; $5,042,593 in other reportable compensation; $425,430 in retirement and other deferred compensation, and $20,104 in nontaxable benefits.

UPMC stated that 4,536 individuals received more than $100,000 of reportable compensation from the organization in 2013, up from 4,159 in 2012.

UPMC’s most recently released form 990 covers fiscal year 2014, which ended June 30, 2014, but, per IRS instructions, executive compensation is reported for calendar year 2013.

Highest-paid non-officers

Excluding officers, directors and trustees, UPMC’s five highest compensated employees were:

• Neurosurgeon Ghassan Bejjani — $2,481,914.
• Orthopaedic surgeon Christopher Schmidt — $1,621,923.
• Orthopaedic surgeon Mark Rodosky — $1,697,728.
• Orthopaedic surgeon Mark Baratz — $1,589,996.
• Orthopaedic surgeon Dean Sotereanos — $1,592,503.

Compensation included base compensation, bonus and incentive compensation, other reportable compensation, retirement and other deferred compensation and nontaxable benefits.

Department chairs

Compensation from UPMC was reported for the following department chairs:

• Derek Angus, critical care medicine, $548,551.
• K. Ty Bae, radiology, $617,585.
• Timothy R. Billiar, surgery, $847,493.
• Michael Boninger, physical medicine and rehabilitation, $338,542.

• Robert M. Friedlander, neurological surgery, $1,435,552.
• Freddie H. Fu, orthopaedic surgery, $1,537,066.

UPMC’s five highest-paid contractors were:

• Rehabilitation services provider Centers for Rehab Services, $32,693,208;
• General contractor Massaro Corp., $19,061,451;
• Medical services firm Medicor Associates, $18,014,508;
• General contractor PJ Dick Contracting, $15,825,430, and
• General contractor Rycon Construction, $11,752,075.

UPMC stated that 202 independent contractors received more than $100,000 in compensation from the organization in 2013.
