Ron Brown, Pitt's director of Academic Support Services for Student Athletes, has been elected to a two-year term, beginning in October, as representative for Region I of the National Association of Advisers for Athletes (NAAA). Comprised of athletic administrators, academic counselors, advisers, sports and clinical psychologists and other professional educators, the NAAA provides academic and personal development services to student-athletes.

Richard Carthew, assistant professor of biology, has been selected by the Pew Charitable Trusts as a Pew scholar in the biomedical sciences. Only 20 scholars are named Pew scholars every four years. Carthew, who will receive $50,000 support a year for four years, studies symmetry in animal development.

Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Jack Daniel was honored for his contributions to Pitt's African-American student body and the African-American community in Pittsburgh during last month's reunion weekend of Pitt's African-American alumni sponsored by the Philadelphia Chapter of the University of Pittsburgh Alumni Association. Deborah Smiach, associate professor of accounting, has been appointed chair of the business department at Pitt's Johnstown campus (UPJ). A certified public accountant, Smiach has been with UPJ since 1986.

Director of Facilities Planning Ana Guzman has become the first woman elected president of the Association of University Architects. The association has approximately 170 members representing more than 100 universities throughout the country. Its purpose is to achieve more effective planning of the total physical environment of universities, as well as to improve the design and construction standards of university buildings.

Matthew Patry has been named director of student activities at Pitt's Bradford campus. For the past five years, Patry has served as director of student activities at Lyndon State College in Vermont.

The Department of University Relations has been awarded the 1995 National Admissions Advertising Award from the Admissions Marketing Report for its ad: "Where Do Bright University of Pittsburgh Graduates Go?" The ad was written by janet j. jai, project editor and marketing consultant, and designed by Gary Cravener, design director.

F. Ann Walston has been named design and production manager for the University of Pittsburgh Press, effective Sept. 1. Walston comes to Pitt from Johns Hopkins University Press and brings with her more than two decades of design experience.

In recognition of his efforts to build bridges across cultural and geographic borders, Thomas Starzl, director of the Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, has been selected to receive the International Bridge Award by the Pittsburgh Council for International Visitors. Mervin Stewart, clinical associate professor of psychiatry, has been named president of the medical alumni association of Pitt's School of Medicine.

Janet Bonk, health studies recruitment coordinator for the Department of Epidemiology of the Graduate School of Public Health, has been elected the national chair for Recruitment and Retention of Staff Group of the Women's Health Initiative Study of the National Institutes of Health. The study will look at the health of 163,000 women of various racial and ethnic backgrounds from 40 communities across the United States.

K. James Evans, vice president and dean of student affairs at Pitt's Bradford campus, has been appointed administrative dean for the fall Semester at Sea voyage.

The Graduate School of Public Health has presented its Distinguished Alumni Award to Lawrence Keller, assistant professor of environmental and occupational health. Keller was recognized for his contributions to the field of industrial hygiene over the past 25 years.

Mary Foust has been appointed academic coordinator of clinical education for the physical therapist assistant program at Pitt's Titusville campus (UPT). Prior to her appointment at UPT, Foust was interim director of rehabilitation services and coordinator of clinical education at the Northwest Medical Center, Franklin/Oil City.

Howard Cohen, associate professor of medicine, has been named director of the newly formed Cardiac Laser Center of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The purpose of the Cardiac Laser Center is to perform laser coronary angioplasty on patients with certain difficult-to-treat types of atherosclerosis.

Two University of Pittsburgh Medical Center faculty members have been honored with awards from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation.

Eugene Myers, chair of the otolaryngology department, received the group's distinguished service award and Stephen Cass was given the group's honor award. Both awards were given in recognition of service to the academy.

Raymond Frizzell has been appointed professor and chair of cell biology and physiology. An expert in the study of ion transport across cell membranes, Frizzell led the research team that discovered the defect in cellular chloride channels associated with cystic fibrosis.

Robert W. Zellers, associate professor of education at the Johnstown campus, has been named to the newly created position of UPJ director of field experiences.

Zellers will administer and place all of the college's education division students in various field-based experiences (observations, student teaching, etc.) in the elementary and secondary school settings. He will continue to teach undergraduate courses and supervise student teachers.

Zellers has been a classroom teacher, principal and director of curriculum in the public schools. His areas of specialization include curriculum and instruction; program development and demonstration; methods and materials; adult education, and grant development.

Frederick G. Pohland, professor and Weidlein Chair of Environmental Engineering, has been elected to the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). He will serve as the chair of visiting teams that accredit engineering programs at educational institutions across the country.
