Herb Stein

A memorial service for Herb Stein, a longtime, part-time faculty member in the communication department, will be held Oct. 17 at 1:30 p.m. in Heinz Memorial Chapel.

Stein, 67, formerly was a WQED-TV producer and also served as editor of Pittsburgh Magazine. He also was a former member of the University Times advisory board.

"He was a very valuable part-time teacher in our department, who taught a very important course for us, Freedom of Speech and Press," said Ted Windt, co-chair of communication. "We miss him terribly, not only because of his teaching and his experience, but also because of his remarkable humor and wit." Among the speakers at the service will be former Pitt chancellor Wesley Posvar, for whom Stein worked as a speech writer, and Helen Knox, a former colleague of Stein's at both the University and the Post-Gazette.

Other speakers at the service will include longtime friends Alan Stein and Lynn Helford, and WQED producers Mary Rawson and Chris Moore.

Stein died of a heart attack on Sept. 19 while he and his wife, Betsy, were returning to western Pennsylvania from Ontario.
