Report to state lists average Pitt staff salaries in four categories

For the first time ever, Pitt has completed a staff salary report for the state Department of Education that shows the average salaries of full-time staff in four categories: 1) executive, administrative and managerial; 2) other professional non-faculty; 3) secretarial and clerical, and 4) technical, skilled and service.

The study was undertaken to comply with a new state law that requires state-related and state-owned universities to supply the Department of Education with staff salary figures when submitting their state appropriation requests, according to Jim Ritchie, director of Institutional Research.

Pitt and other state-related and state-owned universities have been required to supply the state with a summary of faculty salaries since the early 1980s, Ritchie said.

The four categories into which salaries were divided were chosen to conform with the categories used by the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, according to Ritchie.

The executive, administrative and managerial category includes the chancellor, provost, vice provosts, deans, senior vice chancellors, vice chancellors, associate vice chancellors, directors and some staff who are classified as administrator Vs.

Professional non-faculty, the largest category in the report, includes administrator I-IV, student service specialists, systems analysts, accountants, buyers, human resource specialists, nurses and physical plant specialists.

The secretarial and clerical category covers secretaries and clerks, while the technical, skilled and service category covers audio-visual specialists, computer operators, medical technicians, nurse assistants, research animal technicians, machinists, printing specialists, engineer helpers, carpenters, plumbers, campus security, maintenance, food service and gardeners.

According to the report, which uses salaries as of Oct. 31, 1994, the average salary for the 142 staff members classified in the executive, managerial and administrative category on Pitt's five campuses is $102,114 and the median salary $83,040. Median salary marks the point above and below which 50 percent of the individuals in a category fall.

The average salary for the 2,481 full-time, non-faculty professional staff on the five campuses is $30,011 and the median $27,258, while the University's 1,457 secretarial and clerical staff earn an average $18,175 and median $17,856, and its 1,014 technical, skilled and service staff earn an average $22,904 and median $20,405.

Most of those salary figures change, however, when the School of Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) are excluded from the totals. Then the salaries of the 122 executive, administrative and managerial staff on the five campuses drops to an average $90,963, median $79,411, and the salaries of secretarial and clerical staff drop to an average $17,711, median $17,016. Salaries of the five campuses' 1,905 professional staff, however, climb to $30,613, median $27,912 and their 916 technical, skilled and service staff drop to an average $23,308, median $20,405.

Full-time staff salaries on the Pittsburgh campus generally rise when the School of Medicine, UPMC and four regional campuses are excluded from the totals. The 119 executive, administrative and managerial staff on the Pittsburgh campus then earn an average $91,535, median $79,770; the campus's 1,752 professional staff an average $30,752, median $28,047; its 1,073 secretarial and clerical staff earn an average $17,794, median $17,160, and its 816 technical, skilled and service staff an average $23,593, median $20,405. Along with full-time staff salaries, the report also shows that Pitt's 752 full professors earn an average of $95,411 and a median of $79,629; its 878 associate professors an average $67,774, median $54,834; its 1,144 assistant professors an average $63,820, median $53,182; its 170 instructors an average $33,580, median $32,064, and its 578 lecturers and research associates an average $31,048, median $25,728.

When salaries in the School of Medicine and the UPMC are excluded, however, faculty salaries on the five campuses drop substantially. Then the University's 494 full professors earn an average of $74,319 and a median of $71,417; its 544 associate professors an average $51,023 median $49,062; its 473 assistant professors an average $41,877, median $40,091; its 126 instructors an average $30,946, median $30,278, and its 385 lecturers and research associates an average $31,292, median $28,578.

Faculty salaries on the Pittsburgh campus, excluding the School of Medicine and the UPMC, generally rise slightly when the four regional campuses are removed from the equation. Then the Pittsburgh campus's 456 full professors earn an average of $76,062 and a median of $73,105; its 430 associate professors an average $53,160, median $51,273; its 391 assistant professors an average $43,696, median $42,045; its 82 instructors an average $31,031, median $28,456, and its 365 lectures and research associates an average $31,031, median $28,456.

(For additional information on faculty salaries and how they compare to the 59 other member institutions of the American Association of Universities, see the May 25, 1995, University Times.) In addition to listing categories of salaries in the Pitt system, the report also breaks down salaries into individual campuses.

The average salary for the 139 executive, administrative and managerial staff on the Pittsburgh campus is $102,846 with a median of $83,586. No totals are listed in that category for the regional campuses because there are fewer than three people in that category on those campuses.

"In any case where there is only one, two or three individuals reported, we left blank the averages and medians to maintain confidentiality of that individual's salary or those individuals' salaries," said Ritchie.
