Nursing to manage clinic's primary care

Pitt's School of Nursing has assumed management of the primary care component of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's (UPMC) Matilda H. Theiss Health and Child Development Center in Terrace Village.

The UPMC satellite is the first full-time, nurse-managed, primary care clinic in western Pennsylvania. It provides a comprehensive health program using certified nurse practitioners as the principal providers of primary care in consultation with physicians.

"Numerous studies have shown that nurse practitioners, in collaboration with physicians, can address 85 percent of patient primary care needs," said Judy Kaufmann, administrative director of the clinic. "This team approach affords patients high quality, cost-effective care."
