Engineering program honored
Pitt's freshman engineering program as been selected as a 1996 Outstanding Institutional Advising Program Award winner. Presented by the National Academic Advising Association, the award recognizes innovative practices that have resulted in the improvement of academic advising services for freshman students.
Pitt's School of Engineering was selected for its "Freshman Leadership Team," which redesigned the school's freshman seminar to improve student adjustment and reduce tension.
Under the direction of faculty member Sandra Bishop, seminar sizes were reduced and each group was led by a specially selected and trained undergraduate mentor. Individual sessions focused on adjusting to college life, time and stress management, an overview of the different engineering fields and opportunities for students.
