Business group aids Kevin Cecil fund

The Oakland Business and Civic Association (OBCA) has conducted several fund-raising events to aid Kevin Cecil, the Pitt engineering student who was shot in Oakland last summer and now faces life as a paraplegic.

An OBCA golf outing on May 23 attracted more than 140 golfers who paid $75 per person to take part. An OBCA raffle for a trip to the 1996 Super Bowl in New Orleans earned $10,000.

"The success of this fund raiser has gone far beyond our expectations," said OBCA Vice President Chris Monti. "Response from local businesses has been outstanding, and we're also receiving support from outside the community." Former Pittsburgh Penguin Troy Loney attended the golf outing, which included a hole-in-one contest sponsored by TCI Cable. For the raffle, NBC donated two tickets to the Super Bowl, USAir contributed two plane tickets to New Orleans and Best Western provided the hotel accommodations.

In addition, OBCA has raffled off two Mario Lemieux autographed game jerseys that brought in $2,000, and placed "Be Heroes to Help a Friend" donation cans in local businesses.

Tax deductible contributions to the Kevin Cecil Fund can be made by sending a check payable to: Rotary International — District 7300, Foundation Corp., P.O. Box 555, Bridgeville, Pa., 15017.
