Pitt to study natural-gas-powered vans

Pitt has received $719,000 in federal and state funds to conduct a three-year usage study of natural-gas-powered passenger vans. Approximately $38,000 in additional monies is expected from the private sector.

The $719,000 from the Federal Highway Administration and the Pennsylvania Energy Office will cover most of the costs of 20 15-passenger natural-gas-powered vans and for implementing the program over three years. Pitt's Department of Parking and Transportation will administer the study in association with the School of Engineering, which will conduct the research. Equitable Gas Co. is expected to provide about $38,000 to cover the purchase price of the vans. A natural gas fuel station will be built in Oakland to supply the vans.

The Pitt program is being launched to prepare the University and other local large fleet operators for compliance with the federal Clean Air and Energy Policy Act of 1992. That law requires all large fleet operators in highly populated areas to have at least 20 percent of their new vehicles powered by light duty alternative fuel by 1999.
