Pitt wants to be No. 1 — in blood donors

Pitt staff, faculty and students donated 4,400 units of blood to the city's Central Blood Bank last year, and that's not counting members of the University community who didn't identify themselves as such.

Yet Pittsburgh, as a major transplant center, needs over 700 donors every day of the year. Chronic blood shortages have plagued the region and the nation for the past 18 months, according to the Central Blood Bank.

To inspire more Pitt people to give blood, the University's Center for Public and Community Service has launched a blood drive aimed at moving Pitt employees and students from being the city's second-largest blood donor group (behind Westinghouse Corp. employees) to No. 1.

Blood drive promotional brochures and registration forms have been distributed to more than 9,500 staff and faculty at the Pittsburgh and Greensburg campuses. Registration forms should be returned through campus mail to blood drive coordinator Steve Zupcic at the Center for Public and Community Service, 3814 Forbes Ave.

Registrants will receive a reminder memo, Zupcic said. "The idea behind registering is to help people follow through with their commitment to give blood. But you don't have to register to donate," he emphasized. "We definitely accept walk-ins." Zupcic said: "It is important to remember that donating blood is probably the single most important specific life-saving act that any of us can do. It is an embodiment of service to others. So, with this in mind, just get those forms back to me with your preferred donation date checked off. If you have any questions about your ability to be a blood donor or whether you 'should' give blood, just call the Central Blood Bank's Medical Information Line at 456-1942. Then complete the form and drop it into campus mail." The following is the blood drive schedule for faculty and staff, although students, alumni and other donors also are welcome to give blood at these times:
