Pitt, WQED collaborate on special
Chancellor J. Dennis O'Connor will host a one-hour television special, "Baseball: Payoff for Pittsburgh?," at 9 p.m. Nov. 29 on WQED Channel 13.
The program will focus on the economics of keeping the Pirates in Pittsburgh.
Mayor Tom Murphy recently announced that an agreement to sell the team has been struck with John J. Rigas, head of the cable television firm Adelphia Communications.
The program was jointly produced by WQED and Pitt's Institute of Politics and the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs as part of a Pitt effort to offer its resources to examine critical issues facing the region.
Among the guests for the show will be James Roddey, head of Allegheny Media; C. Jake Haulk, a consultant who has studied baseball economics in Pittsburgh; Earl Hord, president of Minority Enterprise Corp., and Bob Smizik, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette sports columnist.
The program will be repeated Dec. 5 at 1 p.m.
