Free PittNet port installation available

The Executive Committee on Academic Computing is again sponsoring free installation of PittNet ports for faculty. The deadline for application is Jan. 9, 1995.

PittNet is the University's campus-wide high-speed data network that connects offices, computing labs, timesharing services and personal computers, and enables access to other local, national and international networks. Through PittNet, users can access a variety of computing and communications services, maintain close professional and personal contacts through electronic mail and bulletin board systems, and connect to remote databases and library systems around the world.

All faculty members at all campuses are eligible to apply. Last year, 75 percent of all applications were approved. The primary purpose of the program is to extend PittNet services to individual faculty who otherwise could not fund such a connection.

Faculty should submit a proposal (maximum of two pages) specifying how a PittNet port would benefit them. A limited number of PittNet ports will be granted based on the information provided in the proposals, which should follow these guidelines:

* Proposal must be written and signed by the faculty member whose work the port will support.

* Only Ethernet port installation charges will be granted. The department is responsible for providing the Ethernet card, additional hardware and paying for the monthly maintenance fee.

* Proposals must specify location for installation and type of PC being used.

Send proposals to Sue Losk, Computing and Information Services, RIDC Park, or FAX to 624-6436. For more information, contact Losk at 624-7441. This program excludes medical center installations. To determine whether an installation is eligible, call 392-6825 or Losk at 624-7441.
